Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY
Date
Fall/Winter 2025
Role
Kitchen System Design Lead
Project type
Full Kitchen Renovation
Park Slope, Brooklyn | 2025
This prewar Rosario Candela co-op presented a constrained L-shaped kitchen defined by structural beams, dual access points, limited continuous wall surfaces, and concentrated mechanical lines.
atelier bauherr led the kitchen as a fully defined system within the renovation, resolving layout, cabinetry, appliances, utilities, and construction constraints in relation to one another before execution.
The circulation was restructured to improve flow through the space, the refrigerator repositioned to rebalance workflow, and the island redefined as both a functional and spatial anchor within the apartment.
All critical conditions were verified prior to design commitment, including structural limitations, gas-to-induction feasibility, plumbing alignment, and electrical capacity. Mechanical planning and dimensional coordination were developed in parallel with the design to ensure that decisions were made with full awareness of their technical and financial implications.
This approach reduces the need to resolve conflicts during construction, where changes typically become more complex and costly.
During demolition, previously concealed subfloor conditions required on-site evaluation and adjustment. Working in coordination with the general contractor, solutions were defined to maintain alignment with the overall kitchen system and preserve the design intent.
The completed kitchen reflects a system resolved in advance, where cabinetry, appliances, and infrastructure align within the constraints of the existing architecture and carry through into execution without unnecessary rework or compromise.
